The beginnings of the Assemblies of God movement - their stance on marriage

A brother sent this to me. I wonder how many AoG churches still hold to this??

From William J Seymour's - 'The Doctrines and Disciplines of the Azusa Street Apostolic Faith Mission of Los Angeles' 1915

We the ministers, must be the husband of one wife (1 Tim. 3:2; Titus 1:6-9). We do not believe in unscriptural marriage (Rom. 7:2-4; 1 Cor. 7:39).

In Matt. 19:3-9, Matt. 5:32 and Mark 10:5-11, Jesus restored marriage back to the Edenic standard. Many are confused over the meaning of these passages. If either the husband or wife have defied themselves in the sins mentioned, Jesus does not give either recognition as being legally married, while the first husband or wife is still living. They must repent to God and be reconciled to each other “for as Christ forgives so must we forgive” (1 Cor. 7:11). If a man or woman marry and either one has a living husband or wife their continuing to live together is a committing of fornication or adultery, and the party who has a living husband or wife should be put away by the other, leaving the man or woman who has no living companion free to marry again, to someone who is also free (1 Cor. 7:2; Matt. 19:9).

We do not believe in making a hobby of this doctrine of divorce, but we believe in the truth by comparing scripture with scripture, that no one in this work can marry the second husband or the second wife, while the first one is living (Rom. 7:2,3,4; 1 Cor. 7:10,11; 1 Cor. 7:39; 1 Tim. 3:9; Matt. 5:32; Luke 16:18; Mark 2-12).

Hello Joanne!

I'm a little confused by this post. As far as I know do the "Christian Assemblies" allow divorce and remarriage. But I don`t know if they are the same like the Assemblies Of God.

"The Bible very clearly teaches that God is against divorce and only allows divorce for committing fornication. Nevertheless God’s underlying attitude is always reconciliation according to His Word. Upon fornication or death remarriage is clearly allowed, whereas no other reason can be clearly found in the Scriptures. Separation can be necessary at times even if no fornication has occurred.

When searching the Bible regarding remarriage it becomes clear that it does not give examples for every situation. Therefore each case should be considered individually with much prayer, counsel and advice from the Scriptures." http://www.cai.org/bible-studies/marriage-divorce-and-remarriage

Have I understood it right? - I'm no native english speaker :-)

Blessings!
Carolin

I think that many or even most of the Assemblies of God churches now would allow divorce and remarriage in their churches.

No, remarriage is NOT allowed upon fornication. The scriptures are very clear that a man and a woman are married till death parts them. In the scriptures that say 'except fornication' it is talking about how the man is not guilty if he separates from his wife if she is a fornicator. He still must remain single and be willing to reconcile to her or live alone till death parts them.

Death is the only thing that allows for remarriage.

Yes, I believe separation might be necessary at times ... say in the case of extreme abuse or something. While there are not examples for every situation, it is very clear that marriage is for life and only death breaks the one-flesh union.

God bless you. I think your english was fine!

WOW Joanne Thanks so much for posting this. My family is AG and so hubby and I are quite "weird" and "narrow minded" in what we believe.(or so the like to tell us)I will keep this on hand should the subject come up with them again:) It also helps confirm for us that this thing of churches allowing divorce and remarriage is a new thing just in the last century! (Kind of like immodest dress and unveiling and and and... )
